ARSENAL ‘WALK AWAY’ FROM LEMAR
Oh Arsenal, we do love you so. Having gone in for Thomas Lemar in the final hours of the transfer window and been rejected by the Monaco midfielder, we have repeatedly heard stories that Arsenal will go back in for the Frenchman in January or next summer.
Now, with the transfer window six weeks away, we hear that Arsenal are are ‘walking away’ from a Lemar deal. Just like we are all walking away from that promotion and pay rise at work. Joke’s on them; I didn’t want it anyway.
Arsenal will not go after Lemar due to Monaco’s demands and the interest from Champions League clubs in him. Indeed, because Lemar doesn’t want to countenance a move to a non-Champions League club.
He also says that Arsenal are eyeing up other targets, but only mentions Nabil Fekir of Lyon. Still, there is another name mentioned on Wednesday…
BUT TO GO IN AGAIN FOR STERLING
…And that name is Raheem Sterling. You may remember Cross’ story that Manchester City had offered Sterling to Arsenal as part of a deal for Alexis Sanchez, which then turned out to be closer to Arsenal trying and failing to get Sterling.
Still, they’re going to try again, according to the Daily Mail at least. They say that Arsene Wenger will ask for Sterling again as part of a deal to sell Sanchez to City in January. The question is why on earth City would agree to that when they can sign Sanchez for a free next summer anyway, and are hardly in desperate need of forward players.
RB LEIPZIG VS MAN UNITED FOR EMBALO
It looks increasingly likely that Manchester United and RB leipzig are going to head to head to sign Benfica’s Umaro Embalo, a player who I know almost nothing about but who is a 16-year-old apparently worth £12m. Sheesh.
On Monday, Embalo’s agent confirmed that he had “already met with Benfica and Manchester, there is no agreement, but there are conversations.” By Wednesday, Portuguese newspaper A Bola say that Leipzig are prepared to match any Manchester United bid.
You’re never going to guess who Embalo’s agent is, so here’s a clue: It rhymes with Gorge Pendes.
CHELSEA TO SELL WILLIAN, BUY LUCAS MOURA
We’re off to France now, and some pretty transparent attempts from Paris saint-Germain to leak information about elite clubs wanting their players. You may have heard that they need to shift a few in order to avoid financial shenanigans.
Le 10 Sport says that Chelsea want to get rid of Willian in January in order to fund a bid for PSG’s Lucas Moura, which would seem a little odd. Willian has been in mediocre form of late, but is Moura really an upgrade, given that he has no experience of the Premier League?
Still, we’re told that Chelsea want £27m for Willian, which seems pretty reasonably in the current climate.
Antonio Conte is wanted to revive Italy… Watford have rejected Everton’s second offer of £8.5m for Marco Silva… Jose Mourinho currently sees Valencia’s Carlos Soler as his main January transfer target… Brendan Rodgers has put Reading defender Liam Moore at the top of his list.
